Safety Precautions while wildlife viewing: The majority of the safaris that Journeys Uganda offers feature wildlife viewing, which is usually the highlight for most visitors. This may be done through game drives in vehicles or nature walks and trekking, with the big five (rhinos, elephants, buffaloes, lions, and leopards) and primates being the main attractions. Gorilla trekking, bird viewing, chimpanzee trekking, colobus monkey trekking, golden monkey trekking, rhino viewing, nature walks, and forest walks/hikes are a few examples of unforgettable nature experiences. Respect for animals and their environments is required. You will be advised on how to conduct yourself on safari to reduce the likelihood of any potentially dangerous encounters with wildlife. Keep in mind that you are seeing wild creatures, whose habits can vary.
These are our recommended safety precautions while wildlife viewing:
- When on a walking/trekking safari, pay attention to where you step and stick close to your guide. Don’t stray off by yourself. Please do not urinate in the bush; instead, proceed just behind the automobile.
- Don’t obstruct an animal’s path; for example, if by standing between a hippo and some water, it will become panicked and may attack you. Or you risk being attacked if you drive between elephants that are carrying offspring.
- Keep your distance from the animals to avoid frightening them or inciting an assault.

- Use repellents to keep mosquitoes away from you. To avoid stinging plants, wear long sleeves when taking walks through forests and other natural areas.
- Another very important guidline among safety precautions while wildlife viewing is that when staying in a tent, never store food in your room as this will draw animals to your tent.
- When driving or stopping, never sit on the car’s roof or lean out the window.
- When going on a game drive, stay in the car unless you are in an area that has been designated for picnics, stretching or lavatory usage.
- Running in a wildlife area attracts predators and makes you a target for assault. During a walking safari, pay attention to the guide’s instructions regarding what to do if an animal tries to charge you. This is very important among safety precautions while wildlife viewing in Uganda.
