This 6-day Mabamba and Lake Mburo Birding Tour in Uganda takes you through two of Uganda’s most rewarding birding destinations. This tour takes you through the experience of birding the shores of Lake Victoria, the biggest freshwater lake in Africa, and Lake Mburo National Park in western Uganda. Some of the trip’s major highlights include the prehistoric-looking and highly sought-after Shoebill Stork, the elusive African Finfoot, and the Red-faced Barbet, among others.

Detailed Itinerary of the 6-day Mabamba and Lake Mburo Birding Tour
Day 1: Arrival and birding Entebbe environs
When you arrive at Entebbe International Airport, you will be welcomed by a Journeys Uganda representative, who will transfer you to your accommodation facility. We shall find time and visit the nearby Entebbe Botanical Gardens for an amazing birding excursion featuring the Red-chested, Diederick and Klaas’s Cuckoos, Olive, Olive-bellied, Green-headed and red-chested sunbirds, Ross’s and Great Blue Turacos, Black Bishop, Grey Woodpecker and the Bare-faced Go-away Bird, among others. Dinner and overnight at Jet Villas
Day 2: Birding Mabamba for the Shoebill Stork
Your birdwatching adventure in the Mabamba Swamps will begin after breakfast and a packed lunch. Bird to the locations where birdwatchers go canoeing in large quantities to find birds that dwell around water; in the evening, the search for species of open grasslands and forests will begin close to the bay. Look out for a giant bird species preying on fish called the Shoebill Stork.
The elusive Shoebill, Papyrus Gonolek, White-faced Whistling-duck, Fulvous Whistling Duck, Goliath Heron, Purple Heron, Common Squacco Heron, Long-toed Plover, African Water Rail, Grey and Black-headed Herons, Striated Heron, Pygmy Goose, Yellow-billed Duck, Black Crake, Swamp Moorhen, Allen’s Gallinule, African Jacana, Rufous-naped Lark, Flappet Lark, Mosque Swallow, Weyn’s Weaver, White-shouldered Tit, and Sand Martin will feature on this birding excursion
Eurasian Hobby, Tropical Boubou, Striped Kingfisher, Common Stonechat, Brown Snake-Eagle, Little Bee-eater, for an avid or fortuitous birdwatcher, seeing the Red-chested Cuckoo, Klass’s Cuckoo, Diedrick Cuckoo, White-browed and Senegal Coucals, Yellow-rumped Tinkerbird, Yellow White-eye, common and black-capped Waxbill, and more than a hundred other bird species is a must. Day 3: Birding to Lake Mburo National Park
We head to Lake Mburo National Park, the greatest location to find African Finfoots, after breakfast and with a packed lunch. Make a quick stop at the Equator for a picture opportunity and an educational discourse. We will make multiple stops along the way to observe the stunning environment and look for papyrus endemic species in the shrubs and papyrus swamps beside the road. After checking in, we’ll go on an evening game drive to see a variety of mammals and bird species, including warthogs, zebras, elephants, and giraffes, among others. Day 4: Birding Lake Mburo National Park (Game drive and boat ride)
Get breakfast early in the morning, then head out in a game car for some birding in the savannah. After lunch, come back for a boat ride. While on a game drive and boat ride, look out for African Finfoot, Coqui, Red-winged Francolins, Blue-spotted Wood Dove, Brown Parrot, Barefaced Go-away birds, Harlequin and Blue Quails, Common Button Quail, White-headed and Black-billed Barbet, Greenwood Hoopoe, Common Scimitarbill, Blue-napped Mousebird, Blue-breasted and Shining-blue Kingfishers, Lilac-breasted Roller, African-grey Hornbill, the Nubian, The Grey Woodpeckers, Brown-eared, and Buff-spotted… Stout, Cisticolas, and Trilling, Wing-snapping Red-necked Spurfowl, Temminck’s Courser, and Black-bellied Bustard
African Fish Eagle, Lesser and Great Swamp Warblers, Black Crake, Common Squacco, Striated, Goliath, Purple, Black-headed, Grey, and Black-headed Herons, Great White and Pink-backed Pelicans, African-wattled Plover, Rufous-naped and Flappet larks, Rufous-chested Swallow, Yellow-throated Longclaw, Black-winged Bishop, Chubb’s, Carruthers, and several other Cisticolas. Day 5: Morning Game drive and Birding to Entebbe
After an early breakfast, embark on a wildlife drive to spot other avian species that may have escaped your attention the day before, and then journey to Masaka for lunch before returning to Entebbe at Jet Villas for dinner and an overnight stay.
Day 6: Departure
After breakfast, you will be transferred to Entebbe International Airport for departure and that will be the end of the 6-day Mabamba and Lake Mburo Birding Tour in Uganda.
