Tracking mountain gorillas in the Virunga Region is a once-in-a-lifetime experience that can only be had on this nine-day African safari via Uganda, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Before crossing into Rwanda for another gorilla trekking experience and subsequently visiting the Nyiragongo Volcanoes, you will also visit the savannah wildlife in Queen Elizabeth National Park and unwind on the islands of Lake Bunyonyi.

Day 1: Transfer to Queen Elizabeth Wildlife Park (5-7 hours)

On your 9-Day Gorilla Trekking Adventure in Uganda, Rwanda, and DR Congo, our driving guide will pick you up in the morning and drive you to Queen Elizabeth Wildlife Park. On the way, you will stop for pictures at the Equator and have lunch in Mbarara. After dinner and an evening game drive, spend the night at Mweya Safari Lodge, Katara Lodge, Park View Lodge, or Enganzi Lodge.

Day 2: Morning game drive and afternoon launch cruise

After your breakfast, you will head out for an early morning game drive in search of African lions, buffalo herds, elephants, antelopes, and many other species. After lunch, you will have a boat tour in the afternoon along the Kazinga Channel, which is home to the greatest concentration of hippos in Africa. You can anticipate seeing 611 different species of birds and enormous Nile crocodiles. Spend the night at your lodge on the first day.

Day 3: Ishasha game drive, transfer to Bwindi Gorilla Park (4-6 hours)

Take a game drive through the Ishasha region, which is known for its tree-climbing lions, on your way to Bwindi Gorilla Park. Stop for lunch at the Savannah Hotel. Proceed to Bwindi in the Ruhija section of the national park in the afternoon, arriving early in the evening, and then continue on to the nearby Batwa community settlements for a visit. Dinner and accommodation at the Gorilla Mist Camp, Bakiga Lodge, Bwindi Forest Lodge, or Bakiga Lodge.

Day 4: Bwindi Gorilla trekking, transfer to lake Bunyonyi

After taking an early breakfast, you will head to the park headquarters for a briefing before beginning your hike for mountain gorillas. You will begin your hiking adventure in pursuit of the gorillas at 8:30 am and spend approximately six hours in the jungle before returning to the accommodation. Transfer to Lake Bunyonyi, a lava-dammed wonderland, in the afternoon. At Bunyonyi Island Resort, Bunyonyi Eco Resort, or Bunyonyi Rock Resort, have dinner and spend the night.

Day 5: Cross to Rwanda & City tour (7-9hrs)

After enjoying your breakfast in the morning, depart from the lodge and head across the Katuna border to Rwanda. Take a tour of the city’s tourist attractions after arriving in Kigali, have lunch, and then continue to Volcanoes National Park. Overnight stay and dinner at D Vinci, Gorilla Solution, or Mountain Gorillas View Lodges.

Day 6: Several Tour Options & transfer to lake Kivu

You will select the choice that best suits your needs from among the various options available to you on this particular day in the Volcanoes National Park. Hiking to the Diana Fossey site, which is tucked away between the stunning twin lakes of Burera and Ruhondo, is one of these, as is hiking with mountain gorillas and golden monkeys. Transfer to Lake Kivu after lunch, unwind on the beach or along the shore, or enjoy a boat ride to Coffee Island. Dinner and sleep are provided at the Kivu Serena Hotel, also known as Hotel Paradise Marahide.

Day 7: Cross to Democratic Republic of Congo

After breakfast in the morning, travel for around three hours to the Democratic Republic of the Congo’s Goma town. Take a tour of the city of Goma before continuing on to the Virunga National Park. Dinner and stay at the Nyiragongo Volcano Tented Camp, Bukima Tented Camp, or Mikeno Lodge.

Day 8: Gorilla trekking in the Virunga National Park

After a hearty breakfast, head to the park headquarters for an orientation before beginning your walk through the forest to search for threatened or endangered animals. Additionally, there is a good potential that you will come across other wildlife in the forest, including primates like monkeys, colobus, and many plant and bird species. After dinner on day seven, spend the night at the lodge.
