Birds to see in Kaniyo Pabidi: Situated in the southern section of Murchison Falls National Park, Kaniyo Pabidi is a highly recommended birdwatching spot. Along with Budongo Forest, it is one of the greatest places in Murchison Falls National Park for birdwatching. According to Lonely Planet, Murchison Falls is the greatest place in Africa for birdwatching. About 360 bird species have been reported at Kaniyo Pabidi recently. The Masindi Trading Centre is around 10 miles away from the forest, and it is roughly 8 km from the Kichombonyobo gate. The Uganda Wildlife Authority is in charge of protecting the entire forest, but Jane Goodell is in charge of the research institute.

In addition to being a great place to go bird watching, the forest is home to a wide variety of Butterflies, trees, and other wildlife, including Duikers, Buffaloes, Elephants, Hippos, and Bush bucks. Numerous species of primates are also abundant in the forest. More than ten species of primates have been identified in this area, with chimpanzees being the most well-known, followed by Red, Blue, Vervet and White and Black Colobus Monkeys, Olive baboon and others.

The Yellow-footed Flycatcher is overall greyish with a white belly, a white throat, and unique bright yellow legs.

Several unique birds with West and Central African ancestry can be found at Kaniyo Pabidi in Budongo Forest, including those associated with the Guinea-Congo Forest. Look out for unusual bird species such as the spectacular White-thighed Hornbill; the colourful beaked Hairy-breasted, Grey-headed and Yellow-billed Barbets; the tiny, musical warbler like Green Hylia with a very beautiful supercilium; the elusive Lemon-bellied Crombec; a variety of forest starlings mostly the Purple headed and Splendid Glossy; and the uncommon Puvel’s Illadopsis which can only be found in this area in the whole of East Africa: This area is home to several unique birds, including the Yellow-footed Flycatcher, Black-billed, Ross’s and Great Blue Turaco, Chocolate-backed and Dwarf Kingfishers, Ituri Batis, a delightful forest dweller, Little Green Sunbird, a small but colourful bird, Western Black-headed Oriole, with striking plumage, Western Crested Guineafowl, Grey, Spotted and Little Geenbul, and other Kingfishers such as the Blue-breasted Kingfisher and African Pygmy. The Black-billed Turaco is distinguished by its vivid plumage, while the Crested Guineafowl is a visually a resting ground dwelling bird. Black-throated, Buff-throated, and Black-caped Apalis: These songbirds give the woodland music. The tiny marvels flying amidst the leaves are the Rufous-crowned Eremomela and the Chestnut-caped Flycatcher. The Yellow and Grey Longbills draw attention with their unusual bills. Lemon-belied Crombec: The migrating African Pitta is a master of disguise and come once spotted. A bird resembling a gem; Rufous-sided Broadbill: A burst of colour; Forest Robin Keep an eye out for burst orange. The sounds of the Yellowbill and Western Black-headed Oriole reverberate throughout the forest, as do the busy drilling activities of the Yellow-crested and Brown-eared Woodpeckers. Blue-throated Brown and Superb Sunbird, Crested Malimbe, Vibrant Finches, and Red-headed Bluebill, Uganda Woodland Warbler, Blue-throated Roller, Green Twinspot, Congo Pied Hornbill, Crowned Hawk Eagle, Dusky Long-tailed Cuckoo, African Emerald and Red-chested Cuckoo, White-throated Greenbul, Yellow-browed and Olive-green Camaroptera, Green Crombec, Fire-crested Alethe, Narina Trogon, Nahan’s Partridge (Francolin), White-spotted Flufftail among other bird species found in Kaniyo Pabid.

The ideal time for birdwatching in Kaniyo Pabidi, located within Murchison Falls National Park in Uganda, is during the morning or evening hours. This is because birds are busier during the morning hours in quest for food, exercising their communication skills using delightful calls and sounds, especially during mating. However, because birds are always getting ready to nest and rest in tree canopies during this time, bird watching is a great way to spend our nights. They also congregate in groups, which makes it easier for birdwatchers to see them in a peaceful setting. This forest region is well known for having a diverse range of birds, which makes it a great place to go birdwatching.
