Top destinations for hiking and mountain climbing in Uganda

Mountain Rwenzori National Park, 400 km southwest of Kampala, features the Rwenzori Mountains and several hiking trails, such as the central circuit and the Kilembe route. A 5-7 day hike will give a chance to skilled hikers atop the Margherita, the highest peak at 5,109 m. It offers stunning views of snow-capped peaks, alpine vegetation, nearby farmlands, and the nearby national parks, such as Queen Elizabeth National Park and Virunga ranges in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Besides hiking and mountain climbing in Uganda, Rwenzori trekking is among the best in East Africa, where non-technical excursions are offered to climb the lower peaks like Mount Speke (4,890) and the foot of the mountain ranges. You can complement Rwenzori Mountain with Mount Elgon, go on a wildlife safari to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park to see mountain gorillas, or visit Queen Elizabeth National Park, among other places, for an experience that will last a lifetime.

Mountain Elgon trekking, located 300 km in the eastern part of the country, is shared between Uganda and Kenya. It boasts the highest peak, Wagagai, at 4321 meters and offers various trails, including the Piswa trail, Sipi trail, and Sasa trail, each with its own obstacles.

Mgahinga National Park offers a one-day hike of three extinct volcanoes, Muhavura, Gahinga, and Sabinyo, which provide visitors a chance to do hiking while witnessing stunning views of some of the top safari destinations in Uganda and its neighbouring states, such as Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Hiking Mount Sabinyo will give you 360-degree views of the Virunga National Park, Mgahinga National Park and Volcanoes National Park, all within the Virunga Conservation Area. You will also have an exciting scenery of Queen Elizabeth National Park, the Rwenzori Mountain Ranges, and the misty Bwindi Impenetrable National Park.

Additionally, the Morungole Mountains in Kidepo Valley National Park offer a 10-km hike, offering insights into the lifestyle of the IK people and views of the savanna plains. This scenic and adventurous hike will allow you to interact with the Ik people as you explore their culture while learning their traditions and practices.
