3 Days Birding Safari in Akagera National Park gives you a chance to see over 525 bird species in their wilderness, one of the greatest short birding trips in Rwanda. In order to give birdwatchers as many opportunities as possible to see both birds and wildlife, bird-watching safaris are primarily conducted in the morning and evening along the game routes within Akagera National Park. In addition to the rare papyrus endemics, this park is widely known for housing hundreds of aquatic birds. Expect to observe a variety of species on your safari, including the stunning lilac-breasted roller, Crested Barbet, Black Headed Gonalek, Ross’s Turaco, Heuglin’s Robin-Chat, and grey hornbill.

Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: Transfer to Akagera National Park & birding on Lake Ihema boat ride

After a brief meeting with our company representative and your birding guide, head to Akagera National Park for a thrilling birding safari. The drive takes almost two hours, covering a distance of 135 km from the Kigali Business Centre to the park. After roughly two hours of driving from Kigali, you will reach the park on schedule. After checking in at the lodge, have lunch, and then take a boat ride on Lake Ihema. In Central Africa, Lake Ihema, along with Rwanyakizinga, Gishanju, Shakani, and Mihindi, constitute a vast wetland system. Watch for bird species such as the grey-crowned crane, African fish eagle, shoebill, and Papyrus gonolek throughout your boat ride. Additionally, you will get to witness aquatic life such as the Nile crocodiles, monitor lizards, and hippos, among others. Have dinner at Akagera Game Lodge.

Day 2:  Full day birding Akagera National Park

Wake up early and drive to Akagera national park for full day birding tour. The park boasts over 525 bird species, of which 44 are raptor species like Balaeniceps rex and a range of several Palearctic migrants such as the Gallinago media, Glareola nordmanni, and the Falco naumanni. More still, you will see bird species like the African Grey Hornbill, Ring-necked Francolin, Pallid Harrier, Green-throated Sunbird, Madagascar Pond-heron, Red-faced Barbet, Black-shouldered Nightjar, Buff-spotted Woodpecker, White-spotted Flufftail, Mountain Illadopsis, Carruthers’s Cisticola, Sharpe’s pied-babbler, Black-billed weaver, and Western Citril, among others. Besides birding, you will encounter several wildlife species such as Maasai Giraffe, Lions, Topis, Elephants, Cape Buffaloes, Black Rhinos, Impalas, and Elands, among others. Return at the lodge for dinner and overnight.

Day 3:  Morning birding trip & transfer to Kigali

Head to the park to search for any species that you may have missed in the previous few days after taking your early breakfast. After checking out and making your way to the Kigali international airport, your three days of birding in Rwanda‘s Akagera National Park will come to a close full with unforgettable memories.
