The Heaven Lodge
Originally from San Francisco, Alissa Ruxin changed her professional path from healthcare to hospitality after moving to Rwanda in 2006 with her husband, Josh. As Rwanda developed into a major international travel destination, she opened the Heaven Boutique Hotel and Heaven Restaurant in 2008 with the goal of increasing employment and training in the hospitality industry. In January 2021, she introduced eight spacious villa rooms to the Retreat, which quickly rose to prominence as one of the city’s most sought-after boutique hotels. These suites, which are each 1,300 square feet in size, have high ceilings, organic material mattresses, wood floors, and outdoor showers. They also have private solar-heated saltwater plunge pools. The hotel has been improved with an outdoor fitness centre, a three-room spa, and an upgraded gym.
Over one-third of the world’s endangered mountain gorillas are housed in Rwanda’s northwest Volcanoes National Park, which also offers some of the most luxurious lodgings in the nation.
Wilderness Safaris Bisate Lodge
Wilderness Safaris Bisate Lodge’s hillside expanse is reached via a volcanic stone staircase. Even though the climb is 320 feet, the reward makes every step worthwhile. Volcanoes National Park features six different homes with views of three volcanoes. Bisate’s design blends sustainability and modernity; its thatching is made of recycled plastic and is reminiscent of the thatched exteriors of a Rwandan king’s palace. Geometric Imigongo themes have been used into locally inspired homes by Rwandan designer Teta Isibo of Inzuki Designs in partnership with Cape Town’s Artichoke Design. Wood flooring is adorned with cowhide rugs, and pillows and furniture are adorned with Rwandan textiles. Each room welcomes you with a wood-burning fireplace and volcanic stone showers.
This luxury gorilla trekking resort, which is located on 106 acres of former farmland next to the national park, has supported a multi-year indigenous tree-replanting project. Because of this effort, the environment has been revitalised, enabling the resurgence of species such as the side-striped jackals, tree hyrax, and golden monkey. By obtaining a sapling while visiting and taking home its GPS coordinates to monitor its growth, guests participate in conservation.
One & Only Gorilla’s Nest
In the midst of the lively bustle of Musanze, the nearby city, One & Only Gorilla’s Nest is a tranquil retreat surrounded by eucalyptus trees. Situated next to Volcanoes National Park, this brand-new luxury resort covers an expansive 35-acre area. There are 21 guest rooms, including suites with one or two bedrooms, strewn throughout winding, planted walkways. Natural wood and geometric Rwandan Imigongo motifs are featured throughout the interiors, and large Larchwood terraces allow relaxing periods on basket porch swings.
Visitors can enjoy a variety of Rwandan activities in between trekking to Volcanoes National Park to see mountain gorillas and golden monkeys. Visit the renovated Jack Hanna House, the former home of the famous Columbus Zoo and Aquarium biologist, or sample locally grown, female-owned Question Coffee. This sanctuary offers chances for private dinners with regional Rwandan food or card games on Hanna’s veranda.
Singita Kwitonda Lodge
Imagine living in your own villa with a blazing fire, a heated plunge pool, and stunning views of Volcanoes National Park. One of Rwanda’s finest luxury safari lodges, Singita, has selected an unmatched location for its most recent getaway. The hotel that is closest to the national park is this one. With large windows overlooking the Gahinga, Muhabura, and Sabinyo volcanoes, the eight separate rooms feature high ceilings. The hand-fired terracotta bricks and volcanic stone walls in these rooms, which are inspired by the local topography, merge well with the earthy green and grey colours.
Ginger caramel chicken with avocado and Musanze mushroom risotto are just two examples of the delectable yet healthful dishes that chef Alice Wilhelm prepares in the bright indoor-outdoor setting. James Burnham-King, her spouse and a sommelier and food and beverage manager, expertly pairs her cuisine with the finest African wines. When you gaze out over the 178 acres of land that border the park and occasionally spot a buffalo or possibly a gorilla, you can be certain that the land is being restored through a replanting scheme, boosting gorilla habitat around the park.
Singita Kataza House
We are always in awe of Kataza House, the most recent of Sigita’s opulent resorts in Rwanda. The aroma of wood crackling in the fireplace and the soft splash of warm water in the plunge pools welcome you as soon as you enter Kataza House’s wonderful environment. The stunning landscape is framed by the huge timber-framed windows, making your visit to Volcanoes National Park an essential part of your stay. As the surrounding natural splendour envelops you, picture yourself relaxing by the interior fireplace, surrounded by the reassuring aroma of burning wood, or enjoying a leisurely dip in the heated plunge pool.
Kataza House, which is hidden away on the outskirts of Volcanoes National Park, offers more than simply opulent lodging—it serves as a starting point for amazing gorilla trekking adventures in Rwanda. Beyond its sophisticated exterior, a world of individualised adventure awaits you. Imagine yourself entering neighbouring hiking routes and being encircled by the park’s colourful flora and fauna. Your stay will be a full immersion in nature as the day gives way to night and the symphony of wildlife sounds creates an exquisite atmosphere.
Luxury at Kataza House is more than just conveniences; it is about creating a customised, ideal African safari experience for you.
