It takes advance planning to enter Bwindi Impenetrable National Park while travelling from Kampala. Located in the foggy jungle of south-western Uganda, this park offers a tough yet rewarding experience due to its rocky topography. The park is one of the most popular tourist spots in the nation, drawing large crowds of visitors. This is explained by its distinct features and status as a safe haven for the highest concentration of mountain gorillas in the world.

The global population of these endangered apes is over 800 individuals, half of whom live in Bwindi, with the remaining individuals found near Virunga Volcanoes. Visitors who wish to explore the ultimate gorilla experience in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park can access the park both by road and air transport.

How to access Bwindi Impenetrable National Park by road transport

The wheel drive trip from Kampala City via Masaka-Mbarara Kabale towns to Kisoro will take travellers about nine to ten hours on a well-paved road. Despite the distance, this route will keep tourists’ eyes open because it offers a clear view of many tourist attractions, including long-horned cattle farms, the equator line at Kayabwe, and several folded hills that make the journey interesting as you get closer to Kabale and Kisoro towns. The park headquarters can also be reached by car, taking around six hours via the Kabale-Kisoro Road from Kigali, Rwanda. In addition, it is very possible to proceed from Kampala to Buhoma via Mbarara, Ntungamo, Rukungiri, Kihihi, and Buhoma in Bwindi. From there, one can continue to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park by taking the Kampala-Mbarara, Ntungamo-Kabale, and Nkuringo roads.

Alternatively, travellers can also fly into Kigali International Airport in Rwanda instead of Entebbe International Airport in Uganda. From there, they can travel by road to the southern portion of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park in the Rushaga sector through the Cyanika border in Kisoro district, or they can travel with a guide and use the road from Kigali International Airport via the Katuna border in Kabale district to access Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. Gorilla trekking Experience

Visitors must check in at the park headquarters when they arrive early in the morning in order to receive an orientation regarding the park’s policies pertaining to the gorilla trekking experience. On each trek, a ranger guide will be tasked with leading a party of eight people. Subsequently, you will go through impenetrable forests to find habituated mountain gorilla populations amidst rich foliage and breathtaking views. Depending on the group’s location and individual fitness capabilities, this journey could take anywhere from 40 minutes to several hours. You have an hour to observe these gorillas and learn about their behaviours, movements, and eating patterns, among other things. Thus, a once-in-a-lifetime gorilla encounter.
